I understand that this is borderline ASB, but for the purposes of the timeline let's say that the Republican Party convention ends up being brokered following an exceptionally close race, and Paul emerges as a compromise candidate, and then goes on to beat Obama following the financial crisis in...
Suppose Ohio turns blue in the 2004 election, thus elevating John Kerry to the White House and making President Bush a single-termer. How does this affect the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq? Is the federal response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 handled better? Does the U.S. still suffer the onset...
I've recently begun to think that the way the American Civil War unfolded in real life might have been the worst case scenario in which the North could have had while still actually winning the war. The Confederacy kept the fight going for four years with less manpower and resources than the...
In 1950, the United States decided to dispatch the Seventh Fleet to the Taiwan Straits in order to prevent a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. This is speculated by some to have triggered a Chinese intervention into Korea. Suppose that the Seventh Fleet is never dispatched and China is bogged down in...
Suppose that during the Roman civil war of the 40s BCE that led to the end of the Republic and Caesar's ascension as the first Roman emperor, his rival Pompey had defeated him and claimed victory. How does this change the course of Roman history?
WI, unwilling to tarnish the image of the Democratic Party during his impeachement proceedings, Bill Clinton had resigned and Al Gore has ascended to the presidency?

Whew, long title! This thread is for discussion of PODs for a Soviet victory in the Cold War and maps. Here's my map, still being worked on(light blue represents nations allied to the U.S., pinks represents nations allied to the USSR).
Probably been done before, but most everything has. WI Abe Lincoln had not been shot and killed by an assassin in 1865, and allowed to complete the rest of his term? How does this affect Reconstruction and the way the presidency is shaped?
Turtledove came out with a new book called Fort Pillow. I picked it up from the bookstore yesterday, anyone else read this? It follows Confederate and Union soldiers involved in the massacre of freed slaves at Fort Pillow. Its not one of his better books, but overall I think its OK.
In 1914, war was almost precipitated between Austria-Hungary and Serbia when a Serb assassin nearly killed the heir the Austiran throne, who would later become emperor in 1916. But WI he had been killed? How would this affect the course of world history?
No doubt this has been posted before, but still post what you think would happen if the Nationalists somehow won the Chinese Civil War. I think China grows even faster then in OTL, and the UN is able to achieve a solid victory in Korea. The Cold War probably ends earlier as well. What are you...
