Pompey Over Caesar

Suppose that during the Roman civil war of the 40s BCE that led to the end of the Republic and Caesar's ascension as the first Roman emperor, his rival Pompey had defeated him and claimed victory. How does this change the course of Roman history?

Well, Pompey's victory means a longer lasting Republic and Pompey could be dictator. Afterwards, there would be more power- struggles and...oh, I shudder when I think about the Republic's fate.

The republic limps on. Pompey continues distancing himself from public life while still containing strong connections and having a strong pull in the senate indirectly.

*waits for next attempt to overthrow republic*
