Well, IMHO, probably only the three most powerful princes in Ethiopia would have been strong enough to lead a civil insurrection against Tewedros II. Unlike in Japan though, you'd need the civil insurrection to fail in order to cement Imperial rule and bring about wholesale industrial reform...

Carrying this over from the post-1900 thread suggestion- would it be plausible to have Ethiopia entering its equivalent of the Meiji Era in an ATL, prior to 1900? If so, how might the subsequent timeline develop, and how profoundly might it diverge from our own? And which POD would be the best...

Could work- but you'd probably end up with Ethiopia becoming a Thailand analogue with this option, rather than a true Meiji Japan analogue. The best option, IMHO, would have been a more complete victory for the Ethiopians over the Italians in a different First Italo-Ethiopian War- say, if...

IMHO, the best POD to use would probably have been Burr getting the backing of the British (and the naval squadron which he requested them to dispatch to the mouth of the Mississippi), declaring independence in early 1806. Would the USA have been strong enough, militarily powerful enough and...
