Here's a question. If the Germans (somehow) managed to badly crush France's army and made her sue for peace, it's reasonable to assert that nobody in the West could compel Germany to lighten her terms. After all, without France, Britain cannot at this time pursue a ground war on her own. But...

Wrong. France was "in" because Russia decided to back Serbia and then mobilized, and France had handcuffed herself to Russia. France had no absolute need to start a war over A-L, no more in 1914 than in 1912 or 1903 or 1885. There were lots of people who resented Germany's reconquest of A-L...
