Yes We Can: An Alternate Obama Administration Collaborative TL

"Yes we can!"
-Obama '08 Campaign Chant

Hey guys, this is another collaborative TL, detailing on a different Obama administration that hypothetically lives up as much as possible to what liberals dreamt of after Obama won.

The POD is that Bruce Lunsford and Ronnie Musgrove win the Kentucky and Mississippi Senate elections, respectively, thus giving a 60-39 majority even before Al Franken wins, and even before Arlen Specter defects to the Democrats (and the Democratic Supermajority would be 62 by then).

Lunsford and Musgrove will win due to Obama campaigning for them in the months leading to November 8 as Obama and the DNC ITTL notices smells blood early on. Obama will still win with the same states ITTL; it's just that the variance is larger when it comes to the Senate races.

Also, the premise ITTL is that Democrats don't lose the House in 2010, and that they would still hold both houses after 2014.

We start on November 4, 2008...

Obama will have a supermajority of 60-40 come January 20.

Just to clarify a Collaborative timeline is one where you make a post and then another person does a post based off of that post and so on and so forth?

November 6 2008: A secret high level meeting between Republicans is held whereby they establish a "No." Doctrine preparing to Stonewall any and all legislation from Budget proposals to renaming Streets when the new Congress arrives.

Hmmm... Ok. This is good. Just don't get Arlen Specter to say no to any Democratic legislation, as the POD says he'll still defect. Also, Snowe and Collins can also compromise.

Musgrove won't be much help. He makes Joe Lieberman look like an ANTIFA member.

Can you give me his OTL views? I can't seem to find it on the 'Net.

So, for the entire eight years, the Democrats manage to hold onto both houses of Congress?

February 15, 2009: The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 is introduced in the House. The CBO estimates that it will cost $1.1 trillion over the next decade. February 21, 2009: The ARRA passes the House by a margin of 242-193.

The water-down version (to $1 trillion) will include an increase in the house credit to $16,000, and an increase in infrastructure and children's insurance spending. Senators, Snowe, Collins, and Specter, all Republicans, vote in favor of the bill. The CBO estimates it will cost $1.3 trillion over the next decade, and is estimated to produce 2-3 million jobs.

March 1, 2009: The ARRA is signed by President Obama.

March 2, 2009: President Obama orders a troop surge in Afghanistan by about 20,000 troops.

March 29, 2009: The Equal Wage Act is passed by Congress. It amends parts of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 and states that the 180-day statute of limitations for filing an equal pay lawsuit regarding pay discrimination resets with each new paycheck affected. President Obama signs it the next day.

Surely you mean billion, not million?

OP, you have Jack Reed as both DHS secretary and CIA director. Also, considering his home state of Rhode Island had a Republican governor at the time (who would appoint a GOPer to the Senate to replace him) it probably isn't the best move tactically for an Obama just barely hanging on to a supermajority.

Changed it. Rand Beers is DHS Secretary, Leon Panetta is the CIA director.

April 4, 2009: President Obama submits his first budget to Congress, somewhat lowering military spending in favor of social programs, such as, HHS, HUD and Energy.

April 19, 2009: President Obama submits a new bill to Congress to help generate revenue and decrease the deficit. Called the Comprehensive Tax Reform Act (CTRA), if passed it would repeal the Bush tax cuts for individuals earning $100,000 or more, returning to the 2000 tax brackets for the wealthy. The tax cuts for the middle class and poor would be retained.

April 15, 2009: The unemployment rate is at 8.4%.

June 24, 2009: The American Growth Act (AGA), another stimulus proposed by the Obama administration, is introduced in the House. It entails an additional $900 billion dollars to raise the economy, this time to promote health, infrastructure, and recovery aid to people hard-hit by the Great Recession and other programs, which would become $1 trillion over the next decade.

June 30, 2009: Al Franken is declared the winner in the Minnesota Senate race.

July 9, 2009: The AGA passes the house, 235-200.

August 19, 2009: The Rebuild America Act passes the House, 240-195.

September 1, 2009: The Rebuild America Act passes the Senate, 62-38.

(Gonna expand on NK later.)

September 2, 2009: Senator Ted Kennedy dies (1).

September 15, 2009: The DREAM Act is introduced in the House (2)

----------------
(1) Senator Kennedy hangs on by a week.

(2) Like the 2009 version.

December 8th, 2009: Party primaries for the special election in Massachusetts are held. The Republicans nominate state senator Scott Brown. The Democrats nominate Congressman Mike Capuano.

I'll have more to add some other time, but just removing Martha Coakley's incompetence from the equation should help a bit.

September 26, 2009: The DREAM Act passes the House, 277-158.

October 14, 2009: The DREAM Act passes the Senate, 66-34. Some Republicans vote in favor of the Act in both the House and the Senate. Obama's bully pulpit and greater willingness to talk with Congress, Senate majority leader Harry Reid's leadership, and some support from moderate Republicans gets the bill past the 60 votes needed for clotute.

October 16, 2009: President Obama signs the DREAM Act into law.

November 14, 2009: The repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) military law is introduced in the House.

November 19, 2009: The House passes the DADT repeal, 234-201.

January 21, 2010: Mike Capuano wins over Scott Brown in the Massachusetts special Senate election. The Democrats retain a 62-38 supermajority.

February 14, 2010: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is introduced in the Senate. It aims to reform the individual market along Swiss/conservative "individual insurance mandate" lines, mandates Medicaid expansion in all states, closes the Medicare Part D Donut Hole, and creates a public option along the lines of hypothetical "Americare" proposals, effectively bringing Universal Health Care to the United States.

March 25, 2010: The PPACA passes the House, 231-204.

April 4-June 4, 2010: Senate debates on the PPACA are held. All provisions of the bill pass necessary committees. The public option passes by only just.

July 1, 2010: The PPACA passes the Senate, 60-40. Obama's willingness to talk with members of Congress, Harry Reid's leadership, and Democrats' fierce rebuttal of conservative and libertarian attacks against the bill ensure its success. Two notable agreements were made with West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd and Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu, the former being reminded of care for the working class of West Virginia (and widely believed to have voted aye due to the death of Senator Ted Kennedy and his old age), and the latter om the "Louisiana Purchase". Senators Joe Lieberman and Ronnie Musgrove vote against the law.

July 4, 2010: President Obama signs the PPACA, later called "Obamacare", into law. Economic progressives hail the new law, which effectively brings universal health care to the United States. The law's provisions would still take place on January 1, 2012.

July 17, 2010: Obama's approval rating is at 58%.

----------

December 8th, 2009: Party primaries for the special election in Massachusetts are held. The Republicans nominate state senator Scott Brown. The Democrats nominate Congressman Mike Capuano.

I'll have more to add some other time, but just removing Martha Coakley's incompetence from the equation should help a bit.

I was about to put Liz Warren there, but meh. That's good. :)
