WI/PC: Allende sends troops to Vietnam

Looking at Salvador Allende, let’s say that he defeated Frei in 1964 instead of defeating Alessandri in 1970. As Vietnam war breaks out, he has to make a decision: send troops to Vietnam or not. Would it be plausible for Allende to send tr Either Vietnam?

What would be a realistic fallout if he supports South Vietnam? Would CIA coup be averted? I think he would tarnish his reputation in the eastern bloc and ends up split the left but would this be plausible?
Or North, how would the fallout look like if he supported North Vietnam?

If the Chileans were to send troops to the Vietnam War, the Chileans might do some terrible war crimes just like what the South Koreans did. The Chileans will have to make the long trip across the Pacific and will probably have a stop over at Australia and Subic Bay in the Philippines before reaching South Vietnam.

He'll oppose the Vietnam War, given his anti-imperialist, anti-war socialist background, so there's no chance at all. Unless we have a communist Chile and it's communist Chile sending troops to Vietnam to support the North Vietnamese.

Which would also be unlikely. Shooting American soldiers in Asia is a very risky proposition for Chilean armies.

What I have in mind when I thought of it is if America is itself communist. And even if America is still the United States of America, I doubt that Chilean soldiers fighting on the North Vietnamese side will cause an American invasion of Chile, especially if they are technically fighting as something similar to the International Brigades of the Spanish Civil War.

Did any Chilean government even think of it? If they sent troops to fight against the Americans they'd face war with America.

It wouldn't get that far. The army had plenty of anti-Allende elements and if Allende is really bent on sending Chileans to fight in Vietnam for the Communist cause then before anything else you can expect an immediate coup like OTL, and the army might do it with clear popular support as well.
