WI: Paul Newman transferred onto USS Intrepid?

I visited the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum today, and I was told on a guided tour that Paul Newman was supposed to be transferred to the carrier after being made an active duty Avenger gunner, but a week before deployment to the Intrepid, his pilot got sick, so they couldn't be shipped off. This was in November 1944. About a week later, on November 25, 1944, the ship was hit by two kamikazes, with hundreds of crew lost and the ship being nearly lost, if not for its crew's resilience.

What if Newman made it onto the ship, was on it when the first kamikaze hit, and helped fight the fire on the hangar deck? Then, from there, what if he had kept fighting to save the ship afterwards, or what if he died when the second plane hit? What would be the effects on the film industry and his personality (should he survive in this case), among other things?

EDIT: Whoops, it's in Before-1900. Someone move to Post-1900 pl0x.
