WI: Napoleon IV

Okay, so there are many ways for the Prince Imperial to survive the incident in which he died, successfully mounting his horse; posting pickets; not going on ahead; the full escort showing; the Zulus missing or not being there etc.

But what would life hold for him? I think a restoration is unlikely so what does an exiled Royal do in the latter part of the 19th Century?

IIRC he is actually an officer in the British Army although attached as an observer. Was there any scope for his rise up the ranks to more senior command?

France has political crises aplenty in the later nineteenth century so I would not put it past possibility that a restoration would be on the cards
