WI: Mondale stayed out of 84, ran in 88?

As it says on the tin, what would happen if Walter Mondale, sensing that 1984 is unwinnable, forgoes the race, another Democrat is the nominee & loses as per OTL, Mondale then runs for the Democratic nomination in 1988. How does he fare?

Alright, first post

I think he does worse, understand the Democrats ran Mondale as a lamb in 1984.

Never forget that Clinton won the primaries because none of the he major democrats ran.

Both times were thought of as running against a popular incumbent. That's hard to do.
