Hieronymus had just succeeded Hiero II who had strongly resisted Carthaginian influence, but in his short reign, Hieronymus seemed set to depart from this stance and to seize upon the recent Battle of Cannae and abandon Syracuse's alliance with Rome for one with Carthage. If he is not assassinated, would Syracuse still join the Carthaginian camp? What are the consequences for the ongoing Third Punic War?
