This timeline explores if the phantom island of Frisland actually existed. Frisland was a phantom island that appeared on virtually all of the maps of the North Atlantic from the 1560s through the 1660s. Had Frisland actually existed what would the demographics of the island be? What if any impact would its existence have on world history?

This map shows the approximate size, shape & location of Frisland. The Island would be uninhabited until the 10th century. The Norse settlers of Iceland soon discovered the smaller Island to the southwest. By 930, most arable land in Iceland had been claimed. Settlers seeing the favorable climate of Frisland set sail once more for lands to the west. These emigrants were largely Scandinavians along with their thralls, many of whom were Irish or Scottish. Christianity would have been adopted around 1000, although Norse paganism would have persisted among segments of the population for some years afterwards.

Frisland operated under a system similar to that of the Icelandic Commonwealth until the 13th Century. In the mid 13th Century Frisland was brought under the Norwegian crown. Possession of Frisland would have been passed from the Kingdom of Norway to the Kalmar Union in 1415, when the kingdoms of Norway, Denmark and Sweden were united. After the break-up of the union in 1523, it remained a Norwegian dependency, as a part of Denmark-Norway. Around the middle of the 16th century, as part of the Protestant Reformation, King Christian III of Denmark began to impose Lutheranism on all his subjects. The country subsequently became officially Lutheran and Lutheranism has since remained the dominant religion.

In 1814, following the Napoleonic Wars, Denmark-Norway was broken up into two separate kingdoms via the Treaty of Kiel but Frisland remained a Danish dependency. During World War II, Frisland joined Denmark and Iceland in asserting neutrality. After the German occupation of Denmark on 9 April 1940, British armed forces invaded and occupied the country, violating Frislandic neutrality. Frisland was granted independence in 1945 following the end of the second world war and Iceland's own independence. The language of Frisland today, Frislandic, is an Insular Nordic language most similar to Icelandic or Faroese. The Frislandic Krona is the currency of Frisland. The population of Frisland is 109,379 as of 2015.
