WI: Frankish "conquistadors" in Scandinavia

Deleted member 93645

If Scandinavia's various kings did not convert to Christianity on their own, and Norse/Finnish pagans managed to push back the Teutons for a few more centuries, could the advancing population and weaponry of central Europe lead to French and German "conquistadors" taking over the pagan Scandinavian kingdoms?

Not like the Baltic crusades but more like the Spanish conquests.

Not a chance. The Aztec and Inca societies were devastated by Euro diseases, and the Spanish had a huge advantage in weaponry. There would be no disease problems for the Norse, and their weapons were just as good. (They invaded and plundered Christian Europe for centuries. "Ab ira Normannorum, libera nos, Domine!")

Eventually, one would see a Crusade of sorts to convert the Norse to Christianity, and it would eventually succeed, if only because mainland Europe has a lot more people. But it would be nothing like the Spanish conquests in the New World.

The Kings of Denmark kind of applied for the job and got Papal approval. First in 12th Century vs. the Wends just across the Baltic in present N. Germany and later vs. various pagans in present Estonia.

If you wan't French or German "conquistadors" you will probably have to find a way to get rid of the Kings of Denmark.

BTW the sign of Papal approval, at least for the crusades in Estonia was a crossbanner. This papal crossbanner - "the 13th Century ISO certification of Crusade" became the present day flag of Denmark - Dannebrog.
