WI: Alex Salmond joined the Labour Party

Salmond often recalls the time a Labour Party canvasser came to the door. "That's OK," said the Labour man, when told about Mrs Salmond's Tory allegiances. "Just as long as she's not voting for the Scottish Nose Pickers." His father, who was friends with an SNP supporter, was so incensed by the slur that he switched to the nationalist side, and his young son followed suit. Or so the story goes.

If we assume this is true, what if that Labour Party canvasser skipped the Salmond household that day and he never joined the SNP, but followed his dad into Labour.

Well. What if?

Moderately succesful - well known backbench MP at the very least.

I could see him as Chancellor, certainly, but not PM for some reason.

Oh, and as the SNP is a petit-bourgeois national capitalist party in OTL, AS being in Labour is part of, or even helps trigger, the rise of Nulabor scabbing in all its forms.

Maybe the Scottish nationalist movement becomes more radicalised (towards either end of the spectrum).

Anyway, the game's not over yet in OTL.
