Jerusalem AUC 830
Why aren’t you circumcised daddy?
That is a good question Timothy, now that you are old enough to understand. You are having your Bar Mitzvah this year, after all. The answer is that Paul came in saying that I, Titus did not need to be circumcised. This question leads to another question. Why are you circumcised?
“I think it has something to do with Barnabas.”
“Yes, and I can tell you the story.”
Some Wayfarers in Antioch had gotten the idea that it was all right to eat swine. Paul enabled that idea. When James found out about it, he sent word that it just wasn’t kosher. He said that Gentiles believers could eat swine, but not in the company of Jews, but provided that it was slaughtered acccording to kosher. Paul got upset and broke up his friendship with Barnabas.
Now Barnabas was a Wayfarer since the days of John the Baptist. Do you remember him?
“Yes, he’s the guy who lost his head over a hoochy coochy”
“Well, son but there is more to it than that. They say that Antipas was afraid that he would stir up a revolt.”
So Barnabas was a follower since the days of John the Baptist. And after Judas defected, he lost out by one straw of becoming the 12th apostle. After Paul dissed him Barnabas got a copy of the Galatians letter.
“What happened next?”
Barnabas heard that Paul was planning to take a contribution to
James in Jerusalem. Since he was hoping for them to reconcile, he decided
to meet both of them together. He got there just in time.
This is the POD.
When Paul got to Jerusalem, James told him that there were rumors
that Paul was discouraging Jews from circumcising their children. James was going to pass it off with Paul undergoing a Nazarene procedure.
This is when Barnabas came in. He showed a copy of Galatians and other letters. These letters stated that it was foolish to circumcise when one is not already circumcised, and that it would be a falling from grace. Paul had also said that there was no spiritual difference between Greek and Jew. And after he showed the letters, he asked. “Are Jewish boys born circumcised?”
James and Barnabas then confronted Paul. They got him to write a clarification. While Paul still held that gentile adults did not have to be circumcised, he agreed that it was proper for them to circumcise their sons.
“Well son. This is why you are circumcised. Now I am going to tell you why we are still in Jerusalem in 830 AUC.
After Paul clarified his statements, James sent him out of the country. “You are always stirring up trouble among the Jews. Therefore, I am going to send you to places where there are few if any Jews. You said you wanted to go to Hispania. So I am going to send you to Finisterre in Lusitania. To pay for your fare, I will use some of your contribution, and we will accept the rest. After you spend a winter in Lusitania, I will send you to Batavia at the edge of the Empire. There are even fewer Jews there than in Lusitania. There is a ship leaving tomorrow. Since Barnabas said that there might be trouble, I am sending an armed escort to the ship.”
On the next day some troublemakers from Asia Minor came looking for Paul. They could not find him in the Temple; he was safely on the ship. He departed in the spring of 811, and they arrived in Finisterre In October. Paul was glad to be starting a new church. He had one advantage. Having spent some time on Galatia, he had picked up some of the local language. He found that the Galicians were also able to understand him. Salesman that he was, he was able to found two churches before he left next spring, one in Vigo, and the other in OTL Santiago.
He arrived in Batavia in September 812 and began to preach the gospel. When the local seeress heard that he was talking about a man who hanged on a tree, she sent for him at once.
