Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

WHY, in alternate worlds, does EVERY socialist or communist nation HAVE to rely on the hammer-and-sickle as a symbol???????

Certainly, we can be more creative than that?

It appears I misread the criteria for this challenge; I thought the poll would be based on just 3 flags. I did create 9 flags (see above) but 6 of them do not, of course, appear on the poll thread. Lesson learned!

WHY, in alternate worlds, does EVERY socialist or communist nation HAVE to rely on the hammer-and-sickle as a symbol???????
Of course not.

But has EVERY socialist or communist alternate nation on this website actually had a hammer-and-sickle on the flag?

Then again, why shouldn't such a nation have that symbol?

There's no reason why a communist/socialist nation in an alt hist world necessarily shouldn't use a hammer-and-sickle symbol. Certainly, in many alt hist nations that I create I fall back upon real world symbols often.

But, if one of the points of this websites is to share creativity, we should all strive to be more creative, no?

The hammer-and-sickle came about as references to Russia's agriculture and industry. Would alt Spanish socialists/communists mentally travel down the same path? Or might they make reference to uniquely Spanish symbols? What would Spanish symbols of agriculture and industry be?

There are many symbols that could be used. I just think it is a bit intellectually and artistically lazy to just go with a symbol from our world and be done with it.

AGAIN, I emphasize that I do the same thing with flags of my own creation. I only have an issue with such creations being given to the public. SURELY, we all are much more creative people that this would show!

I'm all for creativity but to be fair to the competitor the flags relate to the conclusion of a Spanish Civil War and I think it logical to assume that many symbols would reflect those of OTL. Below are posters and flags from that OTL conflict, when use of the hammer & sickle was widespread.

. . . Muscovite propaganda!! Let the people of the world speak freely in their languages and their symbols without the oppression of the so-called "Leaders of the World-wide Proliteriat" as they sit in comfort behind their Kremlin walls!

150px height limit? Seems rather small to me,

Agreed ! 300 px was fine as a rule. Why has it been arbitrarily changed all of a sudden ?

Please elaborate. Is it an ethnically homogenous nation state we're supposed to create? Are former settler colonies with their melting pot tendencies allowed?
What about an Imperial Federation consisting of Britain and its white Dominions?

indeed .

The United Commonwealth is the auto-official name for the Treble Protectorate period of the Union.
It followed the Mayday Coup in 1840 by General Rosby and his cabal of the General Staff where the elderly King William [II of Denmark, V of England, II Lord Protector of the Netherlands] and his immediate family were taken hostage.
The coup was designed to force the fairly autocratic King to cede much needed reforms to civil government, the Parliaments of the time being fairly unrepresentative of the contemporary makeup of the Union, but increasingly became an authoritarian military dictatorship under "Protector-General" Rosby.
With the death of King William, Rosby lost much of his support and facing impending revolution in the Netherlands a countercoup took place 5th July 1846 and Rosby was executed.
The new young King took the regnal name Julian, proclaimed a general amnesty, and enacted many of the early reforms that had not been delivered; these later developed into the more federal Union of recent times.

The flags used during this period are essentially the Union flags superimposed with the Wreath and Sun-in-Splendour design of the General Staff.

WALDECK

During the upheavals of 1848, a revolution took place in the German state of Fürstentum Waldeck, part of the German Confederation. The revolution was led by the charismatic soldier/politician Otto von Großeradler. The current Prince, George Victor, was deposed, a republic (Republik Waldeck) declared and Großeradler assumed the role of President.
It is down to the skills of Großeradler that the other German states did not crush the new state – after protracted negotiations, Waldeck was accepted into the Confederation in 1852; the title “Fürstentum Waldeck” was restored but without a Prince; in a compromise Großeradler retained the title of President.
With the creation of the German Empire (1871) the Principality was assumed into Prussia; Großeradler chose not to remain in Germany but spent his retirement years in the English seaside resort of Littlehampton.
The flag of the revolutionary state bears an Eagle, said by some to be in honour of Großeradler, surrounded by a wreath and above a sword (“the sword of the revolution”)

WEEKLY FLAG CHALLENGE #120

Most people have heard that the Nazis toyed with the idea of resettling Jews on the island of Madagascar. The Polish Government actually investigated the idea before the Nazis and it seems to have been in circulation for years before the 1930s.

So, the challenge is to describe and design a flag for a ‘resettled’ state; it doesn’t have to be Madagascar and the ethnic/religious/whatever distinct group doesn’t have to be Jewish. The state could be independent, a puppet state or a straightforward colony of the nation initiating the resettlement.

So the flag of a state established by the forced resettlement of a distinct group?

Does it have to be a sovereign state or can it be a subnational entity - say the Soviet-era resettlement of Koreans in Central Asia gave rise to an ASSR there, for example (Not to close this option off to others, I don't know if I'll have time to enter). Does it have to have achieved independence as a result of the resettlement, or can it have gained it some time later?

I would assume either.
I'm guessing that resettlement due to disaster rather than landgrabbing is also an option?
