Was it possible for Portugal's monarchy to be restored in 1968 if Salazar died then itself?

Salazar, dictator of Portugal had a stroke(or was it heart attack?) in 1968 but he survived and ruled as a delusional warlord for a few more years. But what if he died in 1968 itself. Could it possibly lead to the Estado Novo strongmen restoring the monarchy as had happened in neighbouring Spain?
Or was the time for monarchy already passed?

If you want then lets assume for the purpose of this timeline that Estado Novo gets a free game bonus, that being an overwhelmingly successful anti colonial campaign where the top leaders of the FRELIMO and MPLA suddenly die of an airstrike and South Africa remains strongly supportive under Verwoerd
Basically a type of buff to a certain character like in video games

Under these conditions is it possible?
Note that Caetano doesn't necessarily have to be Salazar's successor

Extremely unlikely. It's important to understand that, unlike Spain, which was a "kingdom without a king," Portugal under the Estado Novo was explicitly a republic. The orchestrators of the 1926 coup, which began the process of building the regime, were all convinced republicans.

There were monarchists in the Estado Novo hierarchy, as Salazar opportunistically cultivated their support, but they were heavily outnumbered, particularly in the military...

Well, it's not like Salazar could have tried - made all the more easier by the fact that there was one main pretender to the throne (Duarte Nuno) and all the other claimants (sorry, Brazilian Braganzas) were largely marginal to begin with. However, by that point, things had changed so that if Salazar tried to go ahead with monarchical succession, he would have faced considerable resistance not only from within the regime but also among the Portuguese public. So while it was certainly possible for Salazar to rewrite the Constitution so as to make it a monarchy instead of a republic, just because it was possible does not mean it would be acceptable - especially when Portugal is losing the Colonial War and the monarchy would be seen as just another symbol of the Estado Novo regime that needed to go (and not just any symbol, but a symbol that harkened back to pre-1910 times and hence of the regime the original Revolution wanted to get rid of).

(EDIT: And no, just knocking off the top leadership of FRELIMO, MPLA, etc. is not going to help here, as the grievances went deep among the African people fighting for independence and new leaders would have simply emerged and fuelled more anger at the Portuguese and more determination to become independent. It was basically a people's campaign to get out from under an authoritarian colonial pariah of a system.)

Not very likely. At this point monarchy had been gone already nearby 60 years. So if Salazar dies suddenly to stroke republic would continue. Only way would be if Salazar clearly declares monarchist pretender as his successor.
