Viability of "Dixie/Dixieland" as the formal name for the South?

Something I've noticed in works involving an independent Southern US is that the name tends to be a variation of the Confederacy, with Dixie being a nickname, much like OTL, and never its formal name. Is there any reason why Dixie isn't considered a "real" name, and if so, what could happen to make it be so?

Dixie was never a common name for the South prior to "Dixie's Land" coming out in 1859.

I thought it came from the "Dixon" part of the Mason-Dixon line.

So did I, but there's no strong evidence for it.
