UK intervine in the US civil war question.

Ive seen alot of threads talking about this, but all the ones ive seen have the UK side with the Confederates against the union, why is this?

A strong U.S. is the last thing Great Britain wanted. You know, given the whole war for independence and such. Anything else would be ASB.

In practice it was the only likelihood of intervention. Sympathy amongst the higher echelons of society was with the Confederacy support for the union greatest amongst working class people who didn't have the vote. The millowmers were feeling the effects of the blockade on cotton supplies.

In practice things came to a head with the Trent affair when two condedarate represenatives were removed from a British Mail Packet by a federal warship however Prince Albert in Britain and Lincoln in the USA calmed people down. Other flashpoints occurred when confederate warships were built in British yards or under construction. As another correspondent pointed out a divided America was in the UKs interests so siding with the North wasn't an option. Staying out of it was an as a sensible one prevailed
