I was wondering for some time but what would happen if the American Government was overthrown by a coup?

What would be the international and domestic reaction if elements of the US armed forces moved to overthrow the U.S. Government?

How would the nations of the world and the US public react?

How would a coup forever damage American democracy and government? Could we ever recover from such a disaster?

I am mostly interested in the reaction and the effects of such an event and do not want to get into controversy.

I think you're a little late in avoiding that. Lol. Before you can get into what the reactions are, you have to establish what could have ever led to a military coup in the first place.

Any alternative timeline or history needs some logic or reasonable POD to explain it. Basically who, why and how, would any one "coup" the USA government? And of course is it a right tendency coup, a left one?
