The Korean War goes hot

The mood was frosty, to say the least, at Wake Island. General of the Army
Douglas MacArthur, the liberator of the Philippines, and the liberator Inchon,
strode into the room with a confident swagger, Raybans, and a corncob pipe,
clamped firmly in his teeth. The bespectacled President Harry S Truman, a
failed businessman, former Missouri National Guardsman, Vice President to
Franklin Roosevelt, and for the past five-and-a-half years, President of the United States, was none too pleased with MacArthur's insistance on the use of
nuclear weapons on the Korean peninsula. "Mr. President," MacArthur said.
He practically spat the words out in contempt. "The Chinese have overrun my
position in the north. If you won't authorize UN troops to pursue the Chinese
back across the Yalu, then we should put the fear of God into those godless Reds and we should___"
"General," Truman said calmly. "I'm not going to use nuclear weapons in
Korea. It would just allow the Soviet Union to use its nuclear arsenal, and it would give Stalin an excuse to turn Washington, and other American cities, into copies of Hiroshima and Nagaski."
MacArthur wasn't moved. "But Mr. President," he protested. "If I can't pursue the Chinese across the Yalu, and if I can't use nuclear___"
"My decision is final, General. No nuclear weapons in Korea. You're
dangerously close to getting fired. I'd hate to have you end your career that
way. I'm giving you the opportunity to resign. If you don't resign between now and April of next year, I will be forced to fire you."
MacArthur stomped out of the meeting. His tail between his legs.
