OK...we're all tired of 'Sealion'...but that got me to thinking...what other such operations would have been just as impossible? for the Nazis and other people alike...

How about a German invasion of the Island of Wight? (Operation Lion maybe?)

The German invasion of America, of course...

How about a Nazi invasion of Turkey? or a Japanese attack against the Panama canal? or the Japanese invasion of Australia?

Or even an allied landing at northern Germany in 1916...

British intervention in Rhodesia in 1965?

Real or imagined...what can you get?

Real operations that got as far as being planned would be better...

The First World War plan envisioned by Zimmerman, by which Mexico would declare war on the United States and invade the Southwest.

- Operation Ikarus, the planned German Invasion of Iceland

- A German plan to build a secret airbase on Greenland to bomb the USA

*The Japanese Plan to set the Forests of California alight with Weather-balloons laden with bombs, timed just right to go off when above California.

if Hitler had tried to match Churchill's floating ice fortress with one of his own.

  • China invades Taiwan, anytime from 1945 to ~1990. They simply didn't have a viable navy.
  • MacArthur keeps going in the Korean War, defeats Red China. China might not have had a navy, but 500 million angry peasants can hold off any invader, any day.
  • Soviet invasion of America / American invasion of USSR, anytime after 1949. First off, both nations would have fought to the last man. But they wouldn't have needed to, because the invader would have been nuked back to the Stone Age first. And yet, you can hardly fault either side for continually updating their "strategies" if the impossible did occur.
  • Pakistan wins the Bangladesh Liberation War. Seriously, they should have seen this one coming 25 years before it happened. Once the war started, the logistics were simply impossible.

What makes the theoretical German invasion of Turkey impossible?

A. Complete lack of German naval presence in the mediterranean, coupled with the destruction of the Reggia Marina at Taranto...
B. The rather competent (but so were the Polish and French) Turkish military...
C. The mountainous terrain+the really little space for a large invasion across Eastern Thrace and the Bosphorus...
