W.D. "Donnie" Walker was having second thoughts. "i am a bingo operator, why should I bribe a legislator about horse racing? the competition could lessen bingo profits. Walker thus decided not to offer McNally money to vote for horse racing. Since the bingo scandal was avoided, the climate for horse racing was much improved.
John Sharple was a "Syrian" living in Atlanta. His family had come over from Lebanon, and had made a fortune in the rug business. When he was growing up they would take vacations in the great smokey mountains of Tennessee. One place he noticed was a restaurant called the Sahara, because the countryside looked like a desert.
