Primaries and Elections Without the Internet.

How would U.S. Presidential elections which IOTL occurred after the invention of the Internet have been affected had the Internet not been invented? Would any primaries have gone differently? Any elections? Pay attention in particular to primaries and elections taking place from around 1996 and forward.

Without the internet, it is less likely that Obama would have gained the 2008 nomination. Yes Carter did it in 1976, but for Obama it would be harder to reach his fan base or turnout the voters in such wide form.

For 2004, it could possibly reduce the power behind Howard Dean, though not necessarily.
Of course the biggest one, is that without "I invented the internet" quote Al gore could do slightly better, in Ohio, Florida and New Hampshire.

Yeah, it could actually help Gore and that alone changes the political landscape a ton.

I think the buildup of the web was slow enough that you'd see butterflies before you'd see predictable events.

If the money he raised and natl org he built was the key to his OTL boom, then Dean is boned

OTOH, he might have benefitted from a Carter style under-the-radar advantage with Iowa voters, thanks to his anti-war position and his rural state roots. He actually could find himself liberated from those expectations which destroyed him IOTL.

But there's still the modern day cable-fuelled news cycle for him to contend with.
