Post here historical leaders who were the first to be born in the country that they ruled over.

Martin Van Buren, born in 1782, the US was founded in 1776.

Park Geun-hye, born in 1952, South Korea was founded in 1948.

Angela Merkel, born in 1954, the FRG was founded in 1949. None for unified Germany yet (which is essentially just an enlarged FRG anyway).

R. B. Bennett of Canada, born in 1870, after confederation in 1867.

Mikhail Gorbachev was the only Soviet leader born after its establishment in 1922, having been born in 1931.

For Taiwan, Lee Teng-hui was the first to be born there, although it was under Japanese rule at the time. Ma Ying-jeou was born after 1949, but he was born overseas, in then-British Hong Kong, making the current president, Tsai Ing-wen, the first to be born in Taiwan after 1949.

For the UK, Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher were the first to be born after the Irish War of Independence, although John Major was the first prime minister to be born in the UK after the UK recognized the loss of most of Ireland with the name change act of 1927.

Not historical (unless you count the brief 1990s tenure), but Benjamin Netanyahu was born in 1949, after the Israeli founding in 1948.

Tried to find one for South Africa, but no president of South Africa has yet been born after the RSA was established in 1961.

Mauno Koivisto of Finland was born in 1923, six years after the country became independent. As for Japan, there's Naoto Kan, born in late 1946 – I'll count Yoshida's victory in May as the beginning of the post-war era in the country.

I'm going to intepret this as being about the first born after independence to come to power, regardless if somebody older than them (though still after independence) came later:

-Brazil: Dom Pedro II (1825)
-Argentina: Bartolomé Mitre (1821)
-Uruguay: Pedro Varela (1837)
-Chile: Federico Errázuriz (1825)
-Paraguay: Solano López (1827)
-Peru: Mariano Prado (1825)
-Mexico: Miguel Miramón (1831)

If we go after when the country gets it current borders and not when the country was founded then for Sweden it is 1905 after the Swedish-Norwegian union disolved and in that case the first to be born is twofold

The first king to be born after the union ended is Karl XVI Gustaf in 1946, if his father had not died in 1947 he would have been the first as he was born in 1906.

The first prime minister born after the union ended was Olof Palme, born in 1927 and also the second prime minister born after the year 1900(Erlander was born in 1901) .

For Finland:

First president born after independence: Mauno Koivisto (1923)
First prime minister: Ahti Karjalainen (b. 1923, only nine months before Koivisto)

King Hrothgar son of King Dan the 1st king of Denmark born in the third year of his father's reign, sometime in the 6th century

Pedro II was born in Brazil in 1825. His father Pedro I was from Portugal.
Saddam Hussein was the first Iraqi president born after 1920.

Someone can probably correct me on this, but I don't think that Liechtenstein has had a Prince that was born in Liechtenstein yet.

Jose María Placido y Camaño was the first President of Ecuador born after Ecuador became a country. Honorary mentions to Antonio Borrero, who was born when Ecuador was part of Gran Colombia, and Gabriel Garcia Moreno, born in the Independent Province of Guayaquil - both independent from Spain already but not Ecuador yet.

Joaquin Riascos was the first President of Colombia born in Colombia - though in Panama, then a province of them. Honorary mentions to Bartolome Calvo, who was born in the Provincias Unidas de Nueva Granada, and Juan Agustin Uricoechea who was born in Gran Colombia.

Joaquin Crespo was the first President of Venezuela born in Venezuela. Honorary mentions to Antonio Guzman Blanco, born in Gran Colombia.

For the Philippines, depending on whether you date modern Philippine statehood from the Commonwealth of the Philippines or the Third Republic, it would be either Joseph Estrada (born in 1937) or Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (born exactly a decade later in 1947).

Checked few reigning princes of Liechtenstein backward and it seems that you are right. And even heir of Hans Adam II is not born in Liechtenstein but Switzerland. Almost all princes of Liechtenstein seem being born in Austria-Hungary.

I find this one somewhat hard to believe - the current President of France (Emmanuel Macron, born in 1977) is the first one born after the present government (the Fifth Republic) was established in 1958.

All leaders of former Soviet states including Russia had been Soviet citizens at one point. Surely nobody born before 1991. Most had been working adults by the time of the breakup.

George III was the first monarch born in the Kingdom of Great Britain. William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire was the first prime minister born in the same.
Victoria was the first monarch born in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Benjamin Disraeli was the first prime minister born in the same.

John Tyler was the first American president born after the ratification of the US constitution. Barack Obama was the first (and thus far only) president born after Hawaii was admitted to the Union, although prior to that it had already been part of the USA as a territory. If we go by present borders, no president was born after the Northern Mariana Islands became a US territory.

First to have been born in an independent Ireland (from 1922):

President - Patrick Hillery (1923)
Taoiseach - Charles Haughey (1925)

First to have been born in the Republic of Ireland (from 1948):

President - None (Mary McAleese was born in 1951 but she's from Northern Ireland)
Taoiseach - Bertie Ahern (1951)
