Blue Diaphragm Pink Diaphragm
Technology invents the blue diaphragm (I've read they are actually working on this anyway) which if used properly gives a 80% chance that your child will be a boy and a pink diaphragm that gives a 80% chance your child will be girl.
Now in the Third World what do you think they will prefer? If you can have only two children they had better be sons! Please note China already has a skewed gender ratio. So the Third World pours gasoline on the fire.
In the developed countries the need for a shift to a predominantly female population to get around the fertility crisis will be reluctantly embraced. Polygamy will be embraced by the secularists as a social necessity and if the religionists don't like it then can limit themselves to one wife. One thing that will happen is the Mormons will revert back to their original beliefs and their current inclusion in the Religious Right will end.
Feminists will argue amongst themselves about whether this is a good or bad thing.
