Nobama

Since the US elections seem now to have become a one-horse race, with all the hopes being placed on Obama, what would happen if he didn't exist, or didn't get involved in politics, or was killed before his presidential campaign even got underway, or whatever? How would the runnings look then?

Don't be to sure about Hillary beating McCain. She does have alot of unfavorable things on her record. Also she would have a harder time going for conservatives and moderates because she does not have Obama's strength in rhetoric and charisma.

Perhaps Obama is around but simply decides to wait rather than risk getting beaten because of his inexperience and endorses Hillary or John Edwards? Of course in hind sight we all know that Edward would have tarnished by the affair if he was the nomniee, but maybe it doesn't happen or doesn't come out?

Gibberish.

Clinton was always a Centrist's liberal, exactly the sort to appeal to the middle and right. This was backed up by Hillary in the primaries - center-left and quasi-right voters went for her over Obama until well after he was clearly winning. Obama by contrast is a Liberal's liberal, which is why he was able to utterly dominate Hillary during the primaries, despite being a virtual unknown at the time. The exact thing that helped him then has been holding him back ever since, and allowed McCain to stay in the race.

Young people and black people were eating up the rhetoric, but that's definitely not the appeal of Obama to working class whites, conservatives, etc. They just want to elect Mr. Not A. Republican. Until the Crash, McCain was actually in the lead, despite running in the worst election (for Republicans) in a generation. That's entirely because the Dems picked Obama. Honestly, what could anyone hit either of the Clintons with that they haven't already used? For all that a minority despised Bill, he did leave office with better than 2/3 approval ratings.
