Music PODs

Note: I'll try not to make them all metal centric.

1) John Bonham doesn't drink himself to death. Can Led Zeppelin survive the emerging glam scene in the mid-80s or will they enjoy a period in the darkness like Black Sabbath did?

2) Ritchie Blackmore decides to remain with Deep Purple instead of forming a band with members of the band Elf. In OTL, Blackmore took three members of the band Elf and formed a band called Rainbow, which had a short man with a powerful voice on vocals: Ronnie James Dio. Without his status as Rainbow frontman, Black Sabbath would have never tapped RJD to replace Ozzy Osbourne following his departure from the band. As a result, the world would never have the evil eye (devil horns), better known as the metal salute.

3) Ludwig von Beethoven never goes deaf. I'm not sure where this POD could go seeing that he already had produced some great pieces of music at the time and continued to do so even after the fact.

4) KISS never bothers with makeup and those gimicky outfits and just concentrates on making music. A lot of the stigma during the non-makeup years about them not having good music was mostly due to the fact that Gene Simmons was concentrating on his movie career, leaving Paul Stanley to handle the band mostly by himself. But they still managed to put out a great album called Revenge in the early 90s. My opinion is that KISS would not be as well known because their early music was a bit bland compared to what some groundbreaking groups like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Scorpions and Accept were doing in this era.

5) Elvis Presley never launches a comeback career. He ends up dying sometime in the 1990s due to a heart attack.

Some others:

1) Paul Di'Anno never gets fired from Iron Maiden. Bruce Dickinson does not get a place in the spotlight, and the style of vocals that was a major influence on almost every melodic/power metal band from there on would not become prominent... or Michael Kiske of Helloween might get more credit as the father of power metal vocals.

2) Cliff Burton survives the bus crash in 1986. Metallica, and the popular metal are significantly different in the early to mid 1990s.

3) Euronymous survives his clash with Varg Vikernes and goes further with Marxist-influenced ideas he was toying around with at the time. The result: modern black metal is more atheist than pagan or Satanic, and Marxist/Socialist in outlook rather than (frequently) Nazist (not for all BM bands, but there is a very significant number of them with this kind of supposed ideology).
