Oh god, the eye parasite. Somebody needs to eradicate that ASAP. For humanitarian reasons, and because it combines my two worst phobias (parasites and eye damage).
I remember reading in Scientific American or maybe Popular Science an article where they were attempting to figure out the mechanism by which lizards (or newts or salamanders or whichever) were able to regenerate, and use that knowledge to try to see how they could start growing limbs.

Semantics. However i was speaking of regeneration, not surgically planting an externally grown limb.
You might want to take a look at some of the treatments presently being used on casualties at Walter Reed (have they closed it down yet?).
Adult stem cells are going to be the break through treatment.
Grow your own organs, no need for immune system suppression drugs.
That's a while off yet, organs are a good deal more complex than say growing skin back rather than scar tissue.
Yes, Walter Reed in DC has been closed down, but the new one has opened in Maryland a few miles away from the old one.
