A long time ago, Civilization broke apart as anarchy and lawlessness spread throughout the planet. No-one really knows the origins of the Great Collapse. However, evidence shows that it was most likely due to a virus now common on the desolate islands of Synotralia[1] and much of the Eiyindinokneshian Archipelago[2].This virus had the power to do what was once restrained tp the realm of science fiction and horror, the Living Dead. This virus had a 99% fatality rate and transformed those it infected into terrifying murderous beasts, hungry for human flesh. After this virus began breaking out all over Aeshiya[3], rumors of the recently deceased devouring the living began trickling into Europe and the New World. Panic engulfed the streets as the people began tp question the power of the governernment. In a frigteniningly short amount of time, the Walking Plague, as it was called swept aside the governements of Aeshiya. Even the once powerful nation of Russia could only helplessly watch as her Eastern population centres were taken over by the new plague. The Turkish government had been forced to flee across the Dardenelles as Anatolia was consumed by the living dead. The European Federation, which had formed just several decades before from the nations of Europe (Sans Russia, which quickly isolated itself after the reserves of natural gas and oil had dried up) began a blockade of North Africa. However, with Russia collapsing, a new plan was drawn up. One that many hoped would save Europe.
The European Federation decided on conducting one of history's most ambitious projects. The "Containment Wall". It was to be a series of heavily reinforced walls, fortress and army bases across the border with Russia, a nation that was ravaged by the Living Dead. It generated a lot of friction between the European and the Russian government in exile in Kaliningrad. Troops were sent into Russia in an attempt to buy time against the coming horde. Moscow, St.Petersberg and Volgograd along with the surrounding areas were put under EF military rule and were soon forced to depend on the EF dropping in supplies from the air. Russia collapsed soon after and a torrent of refugees began to enter Europe. Fearing an outbreak within European borders, they were sent instead, to the island of Synotralia. The nation that made the island it's home had recently disbanded much of it's army, and the sudden arrival of infected people along with the lack of a decisive strategy made it worse, which is why even now the island is now known as the Island of the Damned. Thousands, maybe even millions of undead may still roam the island, on the search for prey.
The New World was no different. Panic gripped the nations of Kanatha[4] and the USA. Records show that the USA was once a military superpower and flexed it's might attacking smaller nations such as Afgannistan[5] and Erak[6]. The Southern portion of the New World was once less developed than the North. Canada was being overwhelmed by refugees fleeing Europe and Alaska, which had fallen to Russian refugees. With supplies of food, clean water and other essentials running low, Canada turned to the USA for aid. After several weeks of negotiation in what is now know as the "Washington Talks", Canada agreed to complete and total annexation by the USA with the area holding on to slight autonomy in certain affairs. This new Union of North America survived for many years, although Canadian nationalists attempted to destroy the new union, most were happy with this set up. The Southern areas of the New World along with much of the nations that now make up the Union of Mejiko effectively isolated themselves from the rest of the world, save for Mejiko which allowed limited overland trade with the USA (later UNA) and the Central Amerikhan Federation. Mejiko later annexed the CAF and declared itself as a Democratic Union of sorts.
The sudden zombie invasion of Europe and the New World put any plans for recolonisation of the East to rest. Millions of the undead assualted the Containment Wall, drawn in by the sounds and scent that the bustling cities and military bases emitted while many thousands more began shuffling their way towards the NAU from Alaska. Several weeks after the "Undead D-Day" began, the Containment Wall fell, as an over whelmingly huge zombie army poured into Europe. "Swimmers" as they were known, began emerging from the oceans and staggering onto shore, decimating entire cities. The EF fell several months later as the last hold-outs in Iberia, the British Isles and Scandinavia were over-run. The NAU fared little better as supplies of food and arms began running low after the Undead over-ran major food production areas as well as the industrial heartlands of the former USA. The last settlements on Nova Scotia and Manhattan fell several weeks after the EF fell. The rest of the New World, torn apart by civil war and internal strife posed no threat to the living dead. The last outpost on Argentina fell roughly a year after the EF fell. Nuclear weapons were used, though due to the enormous size of the Undead horde, they were of little use and by the closing weeks of the "war," most nuclear facilities were taken over by the Undead, rendering them useless.
Some say it has been centuries since the Great Fall. Religion has been booming as many inluential people say that the plague was the "wrath of God". Civilization has begun anew, the most prominent ones being the Republic of Amerekha and the Byantoman Empire. While much technology was salvaged, most of it is in horrible condition and is now between Late Middle Ages and Industrial Revolution. Society is backward, with most nations now under absolute monarchies or communal[7] republics. Some say that a few of the lving dead had managed to keep their concious and memories and thus remain the same person as they were before infection. One such person is alledgedly in the New World, though most shrug it off as a wild rumor. Retaking of the land and seas has begun and much land has been freed from the zombies, though the low population mean that no-one can settle in that land yet. The seas have been swept clear of the "Swimmer" zombies via coordinated attacks by the navies of various nations. Heavy traffic along these new trade routes along with constant checks by the navies of various nations keep the Living Dead out of the newly cleared seas while troops and citizen's militia keep the zombie-free lands....zombie free.
