WI Mario Cuomo stood for the Democratic nomination in 1988? Would he have won the nomination? What might have been the election outcome if he had?
Interesting idea.
George H.W. Bush still has Lee Atwater on his team, so expect the attacks to still be nasty. But I'm thinking Cuomo will have a better chance at winning (more charisma, and the ability to show emotion, for one).
Ironically, the attack of "Taxachusetts" might be butterflied away; the ire of the Republican base will still be aimed at the "New York Democrats."
Now, assuming that Cuomo picks someone like Lloyd Bentsen or even Dale Bumpers or Bob Graham or Sam Nunn as his running mate, then the end results could be very interesting.
