The Maratha Royal Dynasty started by Chatrapati Shivaji was eclipsed by their hereditary prime ministers Peshwas during the reign of of his grandson Shahu and there was also a dispute between the descendants of the two sons of Shivaji, Sambaji and Rajaram. Shahu was the son of Sambaji who was captured and killed by Aurangzeb. Shahu himself was a prisoner of the Mughals for years before he became the king. It was Rajaram and later his wife Tarabai who led the Marathas when Shahu was a prisoner. The real power slipped into the hands of Peshwas under Shahu. The Scindias, the Bhosales, the Holkars and the Gaekwads were the Maratha Generals under the Peshwas who grew powerful and became rulers themselves. In course of time the Peshwas lost their control over these Maratha chieftains and the Confederacy collapsed.
