Map Thread XXII

I tried to map separatist and autonomist movements into a single map. It didn't go well and I'm sure it lacks many of them.

Regarding the Balkans:

Not sure what the standards are but:

  • Autonomists
    • Alliance of Serb Municipalities in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
    • Maybe the CSM in kosovo on top of North Kosovo
    • Gora in Metohija
    • Western Bosnia (there's 2 small Abdićist parties that calls for the autonomy of modern Unsko-Sanski Kanton
    • You could count the desires of Together For Šumadija, a somewhat notable Serbian party, as autonomist
    • Not sure if Moldavia and Dobruja in Romania have autonomist movements, but I see nothing in a cursory google search.
    • Istria (somewhat notable)
    • Dalmatia (weak)
  • Separatists
    • I think you got everyone

THE GERMAN CIVIL WAR/DER DEUTSCHE BÜRGERKRIEG/NIEMIECKA WOJNA DOMOWA
It had been 13 Years since Germany overran Europe and became its Great Power. Germany had everything it needed, a stable economy, and large influence. Its series of Puppet States stretched from the English Channel in the West, Schleswig in the North, the Alps and Black Sea in the South, and the Caspian to the East through its Caucasian Puppet State. However, some in Germany were getting too wild on power. Germany had originally planned for German Colonists to spread across the territory gained by Brest-Litovsk, but due to high strain of manpower and general compliance and loyalty from its native populations, the plan was scrapped in favor of a more controlled emigration system, instead allowing Germans only in urban areas, to avoid German out-population. This was not good enough however, for lots of parties in Germany. Many supported the original settlement plan, deeming the Kaiser an "idiot" for not allowing total German domination. Politics started heating up, with the National-Socialist Party calling for the original plan to be restored, and the Communist Party calling for complete "Liberation" of these territories altogether. They were mostly pushed back and ignored until in 1928 when Kaiser Wilhelm II was assassinated by a Radical. The succeeding Kaiser Wilhelm III called for a complete crackdown on the Communist and Nazi Parties, and in 1929 Adolf Hitler launched a coup against the Kaiser. just a week later, the Communists seized their opportunity, and collaborated with the German Republicans to overthrow both. The ensuing war was tough, but the Imperial German Government came out on top, but not without compromise. The Biggest change was the institution of a British-esque Constitutional Monarchy, albeit with high authority comparatively. They would also lax the immigration laws, allowing free emigration across the East but with no form of incentives or diplomatic protections. The German Civil War's biggest effect, however, was the downfall of German Power. Whilst they were still the strongest land power in Europe, their position was nowhere near as secure as it was at Pre-Civil War, giving France the ability to remilitarize North Burgundy and Russia to crush German-backed Separatists. Most agree the German Civil War was the starting cause for Europe's following instability.

Hello, everyone! As hard as it is for me to believe, today marks the start of my 10th year on AH.com. In anticipation, I decided to work on a vector map.

The basic premise is deliberately vague and unrealistic. Put succinctly: tensions flare between Afghanistan and Great Britain, the emir of Afghanistan does something rash, the tsar gets dragged into it, the Great Game goes hot, the British cock up royally, and Russia gets its long-desired warm water port... in the most precarious location possible.

Congratulations!

Boots, Indian Ocean, etc. Probably won't last past the *First World War[1], but that leaves some lovely new realms of irredentism to explore.

[1] Something like WWI was probably inevitable without some serious changes to the dynamics of 19th century Europe, but the odds of the British being on the non-Russian side have gone way up.

VERY cool. This is going to fundamentally change the economic and political dynamics of Central and South Asia. I'd be very interested in seeing what happens in the future of this universe.

I tried to map separatist and autonomist movements into a single map. It didn't go well and I'm sure it lacks many of them.
Nicely done!, here are my questions and thoughts so far:
  1. Is the blue state in southeast Egypt supposed to be a Coptic state?
  2. What is the state that separated itself from Lebanon?, I would expect that every single religious group in the country would have a separatist movements, even if they are not territoriality feasible (i.e. how the Sunni and Christian territories are not directly connected by land)
  3. What is that small pink state surrounded by Pashtunistan?
  4. What is that deep purple state located on the right of Pashtunistan, south of Kashmir?
  5. Quick note: there is no such thing as a Darfuri Independence Movement, at least one in this century, there is a common misconception outside of Sudan that the non-Arab minorities of Darfur want independence, but that is not true, here on the Geronimo no 9/11 timeline, I wrote a big comment detailing more the Darfur issue, but overall, assuming that I did not mess up internet searching, you cannot even find mentions of a Darfuri independence movement that comes from either Darfuri people or Darfuri expats, solely from confused Westerners on Quora.
  6. What is the state in southernmost Patagonia/Chile/Argentina?
  7. What is the state in southernmost Somalia/Jubaland? I have not heard of separatist movements in there, even those that solely exist on the internet.
  8. What is going on in Vietnam?, I am aware of the Montagnard guerillas who fought for independence against both North and South Vietnam, and surrendered in the early 1990s, but I do not know about the other ones.
  9. What is the purple state in central Turkey?
  10. I recall that there is a sizable online/expat community of an indigenous minority people who wish to establish an independent landlocked state in central China, but I forgot who they are and what that "movement" is, it seems to be quite active from what I've seen however.

Hah, fun. I once had a Soviet Russia whose warm water part was Calcutta... through Soviet Tibet.

part of a project im doing, the 9 largest minorities (sorbian should prob. be the last one, but i made it fifth) in the German Reich, a nation founded on liberal ideals, and is one of the most progressive nations in Europe (aka what if the counts of Baden fought against Napoleon, and Swabia was founded instead, which led to the Swabian King (of the house of fmr. Württemberg) accepting the German Crown after a conservative assassinated his father during the start of the Springs of 48.)

Germany excluding Austria AND Prussia/Brandenburg?
While including half of Netherland and Alsace? I wonder how rest of Europe looks like...

Basque irredentism, Euskal Herria, also includes Navarre as its territory
Why are Almeria and Murcia shaded differently of Andalucia?
It includes Navarra as part of its territory. Lighter areas within a country, separated by a darker-than-usual internal border imply a high degree of autonomy for said zone. That is also the case of Granada (guess you mean that and not Murcia) and Almería, which have movements claiming a new A.C. for both provinces. Given those movements are not separatist, I included them in Andalusia and gave them a "special status".
Regarding the Balkans:

Not sure what the standards are but:
About the alliance of Serb municipalities, I found them in Kosovo (either too small or overlaps with Northern Kosovo) and Croatia (I miss that one), found nothing on Bosnia, albeit I think they may overlap with Srprska and thus be redundant. The other one in Kosovo would have been unreadable in the map. About the rest of autonomist movements, I missed them except for Istria, it is already there.
Why is Southeast Queensland depicted as independent?
An aboriginal micronation, the Yuggera Ugarapul Tribal Peoples.
Nicely done!, here are my questions and thoughts so far:
1. Yes, albeit Copts are not a majority anywhere within the state. I went with the simplest approximation, that being taking the areas with the highest percentage of Copts (~30%) and granting the whole state to them to avoid bordergore.
2. An Aramean state, I couldn't find much about it.
3. Wazaristan
4. The remnants of Pakistan nobody (I found) cared about claiming. Nice reference btw.
6. Patagonia? If you mean the one in a lighter shade of blue, that is the Chilean region of Magallanes, which has an autonomist movement.
7. A proposal by Kenya to create a buffer state. Not really a separatist movement now that I think about it.
8. The others are Champa and the Khmers in the Mekong Delta, both expanded to deal with bordergore.
9. Zazistan.

what-if-the-usa-bought-french-guiana-v0-3dge4phhdqw91.png

Purchased from France in 1911, the state of Guiana is the southernmost in the Union, and the only one located in South America. Guiana is a beacon of diversity within the United States, with a population made up of Indigenous peoples, descendants of African slaves, and White settlers, as well as several Asian and European immigrants. Most of the population is concentrated in the upper part of the state, within the quickly growing capital city of Cayenne and the NASA Space Center in Kourou, as well as along the Lawa river. The interior of the state is home to sparse highlands, lightly settled due to the poor quality of the soil in the state. The interior is populated mostly by Indigenous communities and villages, as well as some communities set up by foreign missionaries. In the south of the state, one can find Amazon National Park, much of which has been unexplored, and contain several trails for the intrepid traveler. It is believed that there may be uncontacted tribes living within the deeper areas of the park.
Guiana’s multiculturalism reflects its unique status as the only South American US state. Although the lingua franca is English, it shares official status with French, spoken by 54% of the state. Creole languages, as well as Arawak, Palijur, Kali'na, Wayana, Wayampi, and Emerillon. Tribal communities and villages still maintain traditional practices, while embracing modern American culture. A special brand of Guianan hip hop has developed in cities like New Columbia and Cayenne, while Chinese, Indian, and Syrian communities thrive in Kourou.

Why would this make Wuerttemberg dominant and not Bavaria?

I am somewhat puzzled why all those brits moved to Germany. Something very bad happen to the UK? (I'm assuming these are _citizen_ minorities, not resident aliens). And why is that chunk of French over by the Prussian border? How did the Netherlands get divided with a Napoleonic era POD?

@Guy712 Pretty great stuff, the only thing I don’t understand is the “white settler” vs European immigrant, aren’t those the same thing? Also what prompted the purchase? An early destructive WW1 leaving France needing the cash?

Fair

and Croatia (I miss that one)

found nothing on Bosnia, albeit I think they may overlap with Srprska and thus be redundant.
No it’s the far northwest, just west of the northern bit of Srpska but it’s a very weak autonomist movement so I can hardly blame you for not finding anything on it. The Labourist Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina or something like that is one of the 2 that advocate for it.

The other one in Kosovo would have been unreadable in the map.
Fair fair. Gora is near Andorra sized.

About the rest of autonomist movements, I missed them except for Istria, it is already there.
Ah I must have missed Istria
