Callisto is the fourth of Jupiter’s Galilean moons and is the second largest of the four after Ganymede. Due to its distance from Jupiter and the Sun, Callisto is a cold world. It is dreary and rocky, prone to cold rains in the “tropical” regions and hard snows further north. Its soil isn’t as fertile as it is on Io or Ganymede, and while rich in rare earth metals such as cerium and scandium, it’s lacking in more basic things like iron, copper, coal and petroleum. Callisto has large underground aquifers, but has high levels of ammonia. Because of this, Callisto wasn’t a particular popular colonization destination, but because land was land, they were snapped up offworld powers in the early 21st century.

The International Technocrat Organization (INTO) has a strong presence on Callisto, with the United States, Nigeria and China all retaining federal units on the moon. INTO holdings are concentrated in the southern hemisphere, both on the main continent (Pangea) and the smaller western continent of Utgard. INTO’s Alliance of Republics of Callisto is the plenary body on the moon, and its major aboriginal states include Dyflydd and Fharmor, both of which are atomic powers. Fharmor is highly Americanized, with more than half of its population identifying as either Mormons or Columbianists, while Dyflydd retains more traditional religion and cultural practices.

To the north are the Communist nations, grouped within the Worker’s Bureau of Callisto of the Communist International(Comintern). Brazil and the Soviet Union both have minor presences on Callisto, occupying land on opposite sides of Pangea. The Morana SFSR remains nominally within the Soviet Union, but has been moving further and further away from Moscow, particularly after the invasion of Gwelwald to the north. The invasion has proved controversial within the Soviet Union and Morana as the Soviet body count continues to climb upward. There’s also been existential angst ever since the Worker’s Republic of Anwenap declared the Soviet Union a “degenerate worker’s state” and formed the neo-Trotskyist Worker’s Forum with a few other Communist states.

The Non-Aligned League has no presence on Callisto, but its niche has been taken up by the Concert of Callisto. The Concerto is comprised of Europan successor states that were founded before or immediately after World War III. The nations all went hyper-reactionary, installing monarchies and aristocracies as a reaction to Soviet takeover of Europe, and in the century since then, things have cooled off, though the monarchs and aristocrats still have great influence. The three main Concerto powers are the so-called Three Empires: the Empire of Frimaire, the Empire of the Goths and the Empire of Juno (which were settled by French, German and Italian settlers, respectively). Other Concerto nations include Orange, Tartessos, Phlegra, Gallaecia and Fianna (the only republic in the Concert). The Concerto powers have large, growing economies, and both Frimaire and Gothica have announced intentions to seek colonial territory, either on a Plutonian moon or in a trans-Neptunian object.

The Technate of All Life straddles Utgard, and was quite recently, the Technate of Llydaw, and INTO-aligned state. The people of Llydaw decided that the best form of government was government by computers, and taking a page from the Japanese, began construction of a massive AI system to run their government. This was hardly unusual since the U.S. and Nigeria both have AIs coordinate their vast bureaucracies, but neither have any interest in handing control over to them. Almost as soon as Llydaw’s new AI government went online, things went bad. The Machines declared the Technate of All Life and cut off all contact. The U.S. and Nigeria have grown concerned with what The Machines are doing (particularly Nigeria since they share a land border), as spy satellite imagery has shown entire cities demolished and very little sign of life. The Machines have sent numerous cryptic messages to the United Nations, and INTO war planning AIs all agree that the Technate’s AI has become omnicidal.

Tensions remain high on Callisto. The Communists and the Concerto are both mired in costly military occupations, while the Worker’s Forum is funneling money to revolutionaries of all stripes across the northern hemisphere while also pursuing a nuclear weapons project. The greatest concern lies with the Technate of All Life. The UN wants something done, and they want INTO to deal with it since it’s their fault. The U.S., Nigeria and China are in the process of redeploying strategic military assets to the moon, while also working to secure deals with the other great powers to allow them to engage in a preemptive first strike against the Technate. Additionally, there have been sightings of the Angel of Death Herself, Azrael, while Her death cults have launched various terrorist attacks against civilian targets. Strange creatures have been sighted along shorelines and even stranger carcasses have pulled from the sea by fishermen.

Going out of order with my An Examination of Extra-Universal Systems of Government covers, and skipping ahead to the American Overseas Republic. I've made several changes on this map from the basemap made by Ephraim Ben Raphael, but with his approval.

The Eagle in Exile

 • The United States of America (Washington) is essentially a right-wing Soviet Union. They've moved past their "purge" stage that occurred early on in the revolution, and are now an autocratic state dominated by the military and the "Tea Party Coalition." The Coalition is made up of several political parties, but is in truth just about as monolithic as the CPSU after the purges sent anyone who isn't in the "I Can't Believe It's Not Fascism" camp to the labor camps and turned those other parties into benches for unwanted politicians to warm. Their hold on their allies is looser than that of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact, with the exception of Mexico. The regimes aligned with Washington that were always American allies (the Philippines, Colombia, the Central American states, Pakistan, Taiwan [not the RoC]) are practically unchanged, while the non-traditional allies (Belarus, Serbia, Uganda) are nasty tinpot military dictatorships.
 • China is the single largest economy in the world, although the EU as a whole beats it. After a few political shakeups in the 2020s and 2030s, the hardliners have died out or been purged, and reformers have actually brought about some semblance of democracy. The CCP is still a majority party, but they are challenged by the New Democratic Party, which has the support of the younger generation. China's foreign policy is more about economic rather than military dominance, although they do have strong official alliances with their Asian allies. China's rivalry with Japan is a thing of the past, but Japan is experiencing a new economic boom that is challenging China's decades-long dominance of the East. The Chinese have de facto control of the Spratleys, which still provide China with oil and natural gas. The Vietnamese, Malaysians and Filipinos are not happy about this.
 • While the European Union's member states are still sovereign nations, they have a real joint military, and a joint nuclear arsenal, and are much tighter than they used to be. While there was a brief crisis over Greece, it blew over.
 • As Europe weaned itself off Russian natural gas, Putin's regime came tumbling down. A civil war between various factions ended in the center-left democrat taking power, and they eventually entered China's orbit.
 • What would become the Islamic State in another world collapsed in infighting before they could get anywhere. Assad's government eventually defeated the Syrian rebels, and became a close ally of China. Kurdistan did break away in the late 2010s. The Iraqi regime in Baghdad, a Shia-dominated corrupt democracy, does not recognize Kurdistan, and is rather friendly with the Americans which keep it in power.
 • India is a rising power in the East, which is challenging China's traditional dominance. They are thinking of forming a formal alliance with the strongly anti-Chinese Vietnam, which would escalate tensions further in the region. Of course, the Indians also have to watch out for Pakistan, which has become worse over the years. The income gap has widened, and the regime is very open about its radical Islamist beliefs.
 • The State of Palestine has an exclave in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government did remove some of the more egregious settlements in the West Bank, but there are still tensions in the region between Palestinians and Israelis.
 • Indonesia collapsed into civil war in the 2030s after a failed "Indonesian Spring" movement. The main split between the former Indonesian Republic is between the moderates and the radical Islamists.

Anyone got a basemap of Mercury to the Worlda standard? I was gonna use Krkrbs420's Venus, but I wanted to see if there was a mercury first.
