Part 3 of the Chan War Maps. The representation of the internet as a landmass is of course fictional. The events are real.
The following is a section of the internet after the end of the Great Lulz War of 2011. The War, which began in April with the destruction of the original Encyclopedia Dramatica and the birth of the "Three Carriers" (EDCH, LurkMoar, and EE) and the Anti-Lulz force known only ad Oh Internet has drawn to a close.
EDCH stands victorious, having beaten back Oh Internet's attempts to prevent the rebirth of ED and at the same time uniting the once wandering lulzlings and EDiots under a new Encyclopedia Dramatica. Under this many have proclaimed the "Second Age of Lulz" and with it the coming fall of Oh Internet. Or maybe not... Oh Internet still breaths, though it has now retreated to lick its wounds and welcome its new Corporate Sponsors, most notably Amazon. Hoping to continue on its "original" path of troll-free internet education and meme culture Oh Internet has found it's corporate benefactors to be a godsend. better they believe than EDCH, which runs on donation in much the same way that the Original Encyclopedia Dramatica had. This is of no concern to EDCH, they wouldn't have it any other way, after all corporate sponsors could ruin the lulz of EDCH by bringing in "PR Concerns" and other things that EDiots care not for. With this in mind the new ED, reveling in its new found position as the internet's premier source and archive of lulz has begun to expand into Twitter, Facebook and Youtube with relative success. One of the biggest boons to EDCH is the realization that it has just reached over 315 million website views in eight months! Things look bright for EDCH. Things do change though and the Council of Admins worries that another traitor might be in their midst. Right now though, the thing on many peoples' minds is the remaining rouge lulzers from "The Other" (the remains of EE and LurkMoar) and how to bring them into the fold.
Supporting EDCH in its war, Anonymous had a grand old time. Lately though it has become less interested in EDCH, The Chans, and Oh Internet, instead taking greater strides IRL. The EDiots of EDCH have seen increasing posts and actions made by the anonymous collective pertaining to something called "Occupy Wall Street". Things became more confusing after the realization that Anonymous' Chinese cell in the PRC had not been destroyed months ago after all. It is alive and well and has been leaking information out steadily, a trickle, but still steadily. Still irritated with attempts by world governments to shut down local cells Anonymous had been having a mad fun time hacking and trolling any government and Corpotation that they can get their hands on. local, state, province, country, small business, corporation, it matters not. People who try to mess with the flow of information and people who try to mess with legion will feel their sting. Some more than others, the Church of Scientology is still trying to recover from that whole abducting women and forcing them to get abortions and trying to destroy the science of psychology thing getting out. Never mind that whole trying to kill authors that oppose scientology through drug overdoses fiasco just a few years back. Now, the arrest of "Commander X" has been a sore spot for them as of late, but Anonymous moves on and you know what they say, Anonymous never forgives and never forgets.
As this is going on rumors are spreading that Anonymous has taken over the Wikileak Islands and has started a new project dubbed "hackerleaks". Recently their was an assault on hackerleaks to shut it down, the site went down and then popped up again. Then went down again and then popped up again again. Then went down again again and then popped up again again again. The whole thing has turned into a game of internet whack-a-mole. This however, has done nothing to stop the flow of confidential information. After all, there are other ways to get things out. The Chinese sure didn't appreciate the leaking of that time when they were gunning down civilians in Xinjiang. Then again, they are wonderful when it comes to censorship, at least inside of their country... outside of it is another story.
The Chans have returned to their status quo of neutrality in all things and life is relatively peaceful. Even /B/ has been relatively quite as of late, maybe they're all just fapping or something... maybe something else is going on. Probably the former. Meanwhile, the rest of the internet continues on as it always does, people blog, vlog, search for porn, socially network, google pointless stuff and delete bucket loads of spam. Things appear to have returned to normal. Things are nice and would do very well to stay that way...
Nah! What fun would that be?
For those who had no idea what that just meant: An Explanation
Encylopedia Dramatica was/is a wiki that catalogs "lulzy" moments or moments in which someone is humored through the misfortunes or mess-ups of other people (Yes, people who get their jollies from laughing at other people have their own site). People who frequent and are a part of ED are called EDiots. The site's founder, girlvinyl chose in April to shut down and delete the site so that she could form a new Safe for Work and Family site called Oh Internet that cataloged internet memes and culture. This pissed off Ediots to no end who then formed 3 sites in the memory of the original ED. Girlvinyl tried to get rid of these sites and over the past 8 months have been going at each other.
One of the 3 sites called EDCH absorbed the other 2 sites and kicked Oh Internet's ass with the help of the internet hacktivist collective known as Anonymous. When everything was said and done EDCH stood as the new Encylopedia Dramatica. As of late it has been forming communities and pages in Twitter, Facebook and Youtube. it has also been working hard to bring old EDiots back into the fold. Lately many EDiots became giddy after realizing that their new site had 315 million views in eight months, a testament to Oh Internet's failed attempts to destroy the new Encylopedia Dramatica.
During the war some members of various Chan Websites aided EDCH against Oh Internet, after the conflict ended they returned to business as usual.
Due to the rapid growth of both EDCH and Oh internet, both of them need funding to operate. Oh Internet gets its money from corporate sponsors and EDCH gets it from donations.
As for Anonymous, after the conflict they went back to their regular hacktivist ways and as of late have supported the Occupy Wallstreet Movement. At around this time an Anonymous cell in the PRC, which was thought to be lost was found to be still active, just having a hard time leaking information out of the PRC. As as side project Anonymous took over Wikileaks and revamped it as Hackerleaks which has been continuously shut down and put back up again. Anonymous has been rather irritated with attempts by World Governments and Corporations (and the Church of Scientology) to prevent them from using the internet to spread "sensitive" information freely. In response it has been making things hard for the people who's job it is to stop them.
All in all things are back to normal and many people around the internet had no idea this was going on. Being realistic though, I don't think that two hack-happy sites that are opposed to each other can maintain any sort of "peace" for long. On a related note, I find cyberwars to be exhilarating.
I represented the aftermath as a map... just because. It also worth noting that the character in the lower-right hand corner of the map is AE-Tan, the mascot of Encylopedia Dramatica. The ae symbol is also Encylopedia Dramatica's symbol.
I hope that explained things.
