World, 1863.
The political tensions within the Holy Roman Empire and within the United States have exploded into civil war. The forces at work in the American Civil War need no introduction. However, those in the Empire need some explaining.
The very pan-German sentiment which brought the Empire power under Vandox I gave way to a new political ideology, Saalism, named after the Principality Kaiser Vandox ruled before he became Emperor. After revolutions engulfed France in 1848, and a second Republic toppled the corrupt Second Directorate, revolutionary ideals spread across Europe. Saalism became influenced by Karl Marx's Socialism after this Revolution of Ideas. Saalism developed into a universalist and monarchic form of democratic socialism, which was met with fierce opposition by the masses of capitalistic German Nationalists. During the early 1850s, the seizure of France's government Louis Napoleon and his transformation of the Republic into the Second Empire saw a triumph for Saalism. The 1850s also saw a Russian attempt to conquer Poland and parts of the Ottoman Empire. The three bloody regional wars, collectively known as the Russian Conflict, were waged across Eastern Poland, the Caucasus, and the Crimea. In 1856, the Mexican province of Baja California gained its independence by selling a massive amount of gold and mining rights to the Mexican government. In 1859, a rebellion in northern Mexico erupted into the Mexican Revolution, which quickly swept most of the country into an anti-monarchist civil war between the Mexican Empire and the United Republic of Mexico.
In 1860, the southern United States, starting with the Carolinas, Georgia, and Mississippi, seceded from the Union. They were joined by Texas, Virginia, East and West Florida, Tennessee, and Arkansas. The Confederate States of America was formed. It was not until March 18, 1861, however, that the frequent skirmishes and hostilities escalated into a full-blown civil war.

In many German states, nationalist leaders overthrew their complacent monarchs and formed their nations into Republics. The nationalists marched on Frankfurt, and formed the German Confederation in January of 1863. Now, we find ourselves in the summer of that year...
During the spring, the Confederation had made aggressive attacks in the Netherlands and into Austrian and Prussian lands. Meanwhile, the Italian states united into the Republic of Italy, while Latium became the Roman Republic. Romanian and Bulgar lands rebelled in nationalist uprisings, as did Bohemia and Poland. In August, the German nationalists approached Vienna, and the great battle was on...
