Some interesting spheres of influence went on in the 19th century, but few actual territorial grabs were made until 1933. The civil war also added to a possibility of a divided China, but OTL the outcome was bland, the PRC on the mainland and ROP on Taiwan. My cghallenge is to make the best, most interesting, and most plausible divided China.
Common ideas:
-Tai Ping holds out in some parts of the country
-Spheres of influence become actual territories, protectorates, or colonies of European, Japanese, or American empires.
-Civil war ends in a stalemate, with ROP and PRC coexisting on the mainland
-ROP victory, Manchurian SSR.
