Until a few years before World War II, Germany still had friendly relations with China, however they abandoned them in favor of Japan. How plausible is it for China to be in the Axis instead of Japan, and how would said scenario play out?

Not going to happen as long as Japan's invading China...plus China was getting Soviet support at the same time (In fact, the Soviets were mostly supporting the KMT).
well Germany signed a pact with the Soviets so not impossible that they adopt a completely cynical policy and form a Germany-USSR-China Axis.
OR find a warlord or two in China to deal with and collaborate with Japan, have "China" to supply with weapons and Japan as an Axis partner?
Yea, but they backstabbed the Soviets later...so who's to say they won't do the same with China?
