The author has permitted me to reveal that he is halfway through a spin off - a 500 page story of how the Cubs reached the 1943 World Series.
And lost in 7 games.... the 7th game was a mutual 17 inning perfect game where the Red Sox reached base on a passed ball strike out, advanced on a balk and then a sacrifice fly and stole home

Now you are just making things up..........

You joke but (I'm relying from memory here so I may be a bit off) but when Sandy Koufax threw his perfect game the only run the Dodgers ended up scoring was a similar circumstance - like a walk, SB, and a error. Gotta love weird baseball!

So, we haven’t been arrogant assholes for the last few years, it’s been going on for a while, is what you’re saying…

You mean proudly "American" for over 200 years? No, actually for about the first 150 or so we were proud arrogant assholes from "State Name Here" and THEN "Americans" but we've gotten better... Sort of :)

Josh walked home in contemplative silence. This was his third candidate recruitment dinner. The socialists took him for a burger and a beer

We are looking out of our Overton window and watching the working class being… made love to… through a very different Overton window. Soft landing Capitalism with a few more ships in the 1930s has made the "post-war compromise" more natural and less a matter of the Great Cairo and India['s] Soldiers Parliaments. Something to think of when you fantasise about Anti-Joe in relation to Keynes.

Pyongyang, Korea July 11, 1945

The air raid sirens resumed. …. Many bombs missed.
And then some people just get no lube at all.

Story 2935
Western Pacific, July 12, 1945

The navigator nodded to the chief. The older man put a trio of dice into a cup and shook it aggressively. The red dice came up even. The black dice was a five and the white dice was a two.

A moment later, the officer of the deck of the USS Los Angeles ordered a shift in the base course. Fifteen degrees to port for ten minutes. The chief would re-roll the dice for time of the corrective course to starboard in another nine minutes.

The rudder gently moved the ship to the new course. Even as she was settling on the new course, the radar room called out a new contact. It was not unexpected. The patrol squadrons based out of Guam had arranged for daily fly-overs of the lone heavy cruiser when she had pulled in for fuel a few days ago. Twenty minutes and a substantial course change later, the Privateer flew over the cruiser and then pulled away into a lazy patrol pattern well ahead of the ship.

Let's hope I-58 gets spotted in time.

The conditions that resulted in I-58 torpedoing USS Indianapolis can't be completely averted, if she had a Destroyer Escort then that's a maybe - it depends on if she has a good sonar operator or not, if the sonar operator is good then the DE could prevent I-58 from attacking, if not, then they might get I-58 after she attacks. No Destroyer Escort means that Los Angeles is utterly boned as the heavy fog meant that I-58 fired at basically point-blank range with absolutely no hope for USS Indianapolis to dodge...

take a look at the dates and look at the speed of the ship

Given the 27 knot speed Los Angeles is maintaining, the only way a sub gets a shot is if it is in a narrow area ahead of the ship. The Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary sailed unescorted for most of the war and were never successfully attacked due to their app 30 knot speed.

Story 2937
Tumangang, Korea, July 14, 1945

Half a dozen horsemen continued their patrol along the river. Across the border the Soviets were not being subtle about the road improvements. They had not been subtle about the improvements for months now. The only thing of note today was that a company of tanks were driving up and down the new road. Engineers, and likely officers, were trailing behind the small force noting where the shoulders needed to be reinforced and identifying spots where combat forces might wish to get off road and behind some of the gently rolling cover.

Three hours later, the patrol's report was being aggregated with half a dozen other reports before the new data was sent to the area army headquarters.

Story 2938
Near Prague, July 15, 1945

"JAROSCHEK, we have some new orders for you. There is an infantry battalion from the 106th Infantry Division who needs a new company commander. They had 32 days in combat, so there might be three dozen men with more than 50 points. The assignment is for a year. The division HQ is Karlsruhe and they have occupation duty for the stretch of the Rhine Valley north of Strasbourg to Karlsruhe. They need experience and they need folks who work well with the French as their occupation zone is adjacent and south of the division."

The young man suppressed a smile. He could do a year in the Rhine Valley. A year to know. A year to discover. A year to not be a warrior.

The battalion commander smiled. "You're due to report on August 15th, now get out of here, and congratulations."

Sounds like about to be Captain Jaroschek will be staying in, probably getting a French war bride, and having a career in the Army. He may stay in the reserves, but when Korea comes and the Cold War expansion comes he will stay Active. By the 1960s will he be commanding a Battalion in either the Fulda Gap, or Vietnam..?
