Housekeeping Update:

Rather than post more random updates about Canadian politics, lol, I’ve been brainstorming ideas for a Texas snapshot and a CS Election 2023 preview, but having issues coming up with political party names, as both will have more bonkers, Latin-style politics than Anglophone countries are perhaps used to. Anybody wanting to bounce around ideas are welcome to DM me.

I’m also going to do a poll for the 2030 Summer Olympics - vote for your favorite out of the following and I’ll do a post on the bid process and final selection:

Amsterdam
Budapest
Paris
Rome
Copenhagen

Paris. I feel it could be a good way to talk about post French State France, at least obliquely. If you don't want to spoil anything about the post FS then disregard lol.

Are you looking for short US-style party names or long coalition-sounding adjective heavy party names like other parts of the world?

Also, I second Paris.

The good thing is those names either:
1. Don’t need to bear much resemblance to their ideological make-up, or
2. Write their ideological make-up on their sleeve.

So just make shit up:

Texas Revolutionary Progressive Party
Texas Marches Forward
Party for Federal Unity and Brotherhood
Texas Democratic Liberal Party
Texas Party of Social Christian Democracy
Texas Against Taxation and Statism

And make sure that there are separate ideologically-aligned parties for each for Spanish speakers too.

This suggestion really feels like political parties in Peru, post-Fujimori. To “yes and” off this suggestion, have a succession of presidents end up in jail (I think 7-10 in a row? It’s hard to keep track)

Peru makes Illinois look politically clean.

Idk why but “Texas Marches Forward” made me actually laugh, I love how realistically banal it sounds

Or have them come back from jail to run for office again, Brazil-style

Lol, maybe a bit too on the nose?

But I figured that:
The Revolutionary Progressive Party is the hidebound old left-liberals
Texas Marches Forward was the latest "personalist/sultanist" party created by a billionaire as a vehicle for his/her ambitions
The Party for Federal Unity and Brotherhood is the pro-North American Unification niche party
The Democratic Liberals are the hidebound old right-liberals
The Party of Social Christian Democracy is the Catholic Social Teaching-rooted party for devout but integrated/English-speaking Catholics
TATS is the self-explanatory new liberal right

I didn't come up with good names for a new socialist left, a new environmentalist bloc, and the new hard right.

Too ideological for Latam, go Brazil style and have 5 different "democratic party" "progressive party" "union party" type of stuff that are all ideologyless (if conservative) establishment parties. Or generically named "change party" that are just vehicles for a big media personality ala Berlusconi to run. Those televangelists would be great for this niche.

You two get the LatAm vibe very well.

A televangelist party is sort of what I have in mind in the CSA but it’d make sense in Texas, too. A party run by Joel Osteen, anyone? 😬

Don't forget the "Progressive Party" that is actually conservative!
Amsterdam
Budapest
Paris
Rome
Copenhagen
An all-European selection? Would be cool if the IOC implements some sort of continent rotation bidding like what FIFA tried to do in the 2010/2014 World Cups! That said, my vote goes to Rome!

Or the “Social Liberal” Party that is run by evangelicals

That’s (sort of) the idea, more informal than FIFA’s rotation policy, but yes.

So that’s 2 for Paris, 1 for Rome!

Texas Marches Forward was the latest "personalist/sultanist" party created by a billionaire as a vehicle for his/her ambitions
Then TMF decides it wants to be a real party and the billionaire gets pissed off and goes off to make a new party (called something like Fulfilling Promises) to be a vehicle for his/her ambitions, again.
You may think this is a joke, but I assure you, it is not.

The question is whether in 2020 there is any place in Europe that would be actively unsafe enough that no one would consider an Olympics there. (I know that armed conflict in the Caucuses might not make a difference in a Budapest Olympics bid)
