how would have United States politics looked if the US had ranked choice voting

I know its ABS but it would be interesting to see how Ranked choice would have effected different movements in US from the early Republic to Teddy's independent run for president and more modern political history.

Are we assuming a direct popular vote for POTUS? Or is the system applied on a state by state basis?

It makes an enormous difference in 1860. On a DPV, most Breckinridge and Bell voters are likely to give their second choice vote to Douglas, so he beats Lincoln easily. OTOH, if it's state by state hardly anything changes, as Lincoln had absolute majorities in fifteen northern states, enough for him to still win in the EC.

Much the same applies in 1824, since in most states one or other of the four candidates had an absolute majority. If it's DPV there, of course, then all hangs on the second preferences of the Clay and Crawford voters.
