What if after the war of 1812 the US and British stay in sort of a cold war with each other.

Perhaps the British intervene in the Mexican War. How would no special relationship affect US growth and development?

To achieve this you need the US to be continously beligerant enough that the UK is willing to ignore the trade benefits

Until the American Civil war era most thoughts of the US was that it was more effort then it was worth to conquer & rule the territories so they were happy with trade.

Possibly a 1812 war that isn't devastating to the US but is humiliating enough the Presidents start getting In on a anti-british platform that nessesiates a similar Anti-American output
