On December 17 1967 Harold Holt was pulled from the surf, which had returned him to shore, blue in the face and vomiting sea water.

Over the next three years the Commonwealth would legislate towards the recognition of Aboriginal people's rights and sovereignty. This would bring down the government through a country party revolt, leading to a faster pace of change under Whitlam.

Australia is today known for having spurred New Zealand and Canada into honouring their past treaties, through the decades long treaties process which was not finalised, despite in principle agreements, by 1988.
