The most interesting historical map layers are "1930s OS" and "Historical OS" (this latter dates to around the 1950s). This site lets you compare two different UK maps of the same location side by side.

The site lets you see maps of different parts of the world, and their evolution throughout different time periods. (Eg: Europe from 1848 to 2015)
Far from complete, it links most events and map changes to their wikipedia articles.
