Try here as a starting point ...

http://www.wwiidaybyday.com/ and select option Gliederungen

This site has it's limitations, firstly its in German, secondly it looks like its still under construction so the last OOB date is 16th January 1942 but hopefully it will give you a good starting point on top of what you already have.

You will be lucky to find a complete OOB for that specific date

http://niehorster.orbat.com/011_germany/__ge_index.htm

Gives the June

OOBhttp://cgsc.cdmhost.com/cdm/ref/collection/p4013coll8/id/2393

is the US army intelligence report on the OOB for October but its near contemporary so will be innacurate.

Staldata ( the current publications items) gives weekly strength returns for German forces at Stalingrad which illustrates a problem, strength fluctuates wildly from week to week in heavy fighting and decreases remarkably with fighting over time.

You may have luck on feldgrau.net for specific units but even if the data exists a lot of the detail is still in the german archives

Specific date would be 22nd September 1942.....

But I guess that is far to specific especially as I am interested in areas that in OTL had little or no fighting.

There will be a weekly return from all units at high level, consolidated dailies at army level so if your german is any good contact the bundesarchiv if it exists they will have it.

I know the SS divisions were in France in September - and obviously we can assume that units on both lists probably were there as well.

Anybody suggest a rule of thumb for deciding which units would otherwise be there in September if they are only on one list?

I've found these things fluctuate monthly, or weekly. Best to get a general idea from near dates, then cross check via the individual unit histories.

I can make some guesses what this leads to, but can you tell us?
