Franco’s choice

Which of these claimants did Franco actually consider for the throne of Spain had Don Juan not worked out.

Alfonso bourbon(cousin of Don Juan)
Karl von hapsburg(Karl the Pius not the son of Otto)
Franz Josef von hapsburg(older brother of Karl, did not pursue claim until later in life.)
Dominic von hapsburg(although others tried to press his claim he did not pursue his claim),
Otto von hapsburg(yes that Otto),
Javier Bourbon-Parme(main leader of carlist),
Carlos Hugo(son of Javier).

IIRC Otto was choice #1 but he turned the offer down on the basis that he believed Juan Carlos had the best claim. If Juan Carlos turns the offer down the offer may go back to Otto.

The other main option to Juan Carlos was Alfonso, Duke of Cadiz, who was married Carmencita, Franco's granddaughter.

To have Otto in the line of succession you need a VERY big butterfly. Almost a bat. He was considered around the 1950s. By then Franco was unwilling to give up as dictator. And then even the Carlist pretender had more chances than poor Otto.

Even if a hapsburg was considered Karl the Pius had a much stronger claim.

Having a grandson of the last Bourbon king, he would outrank any Habsburg in Franco's mind And, as mentioned, the interest in Otto was in the 1950s. By the end of Franco's dictatorship, the game was over for him. It was either Juan Carlos or Alfonso. If the former is not possible, it would be the latter.

Not necessarily, while Otto backed the bourbons, Karl the Pius pushed his claim and was even supported by a offshoot of the carlist.
A very fringe offshoot. Carlism was founded on the idea that a woman could not inherit the throne or transmit the right to the throne to her children if there were available male heirs. Recognizing Karl’s claim would require passing over multiple patrilineal claimants to go for Karl’s claim from his mother.

Well we don’t have a lot of knowledge of Carlism in the Franco regime so it’s all just hear say. The offshoot that support Karl and not Javier is rumored to have been supported anywhere between a couple people to more than half of the carlist movement. What caused Karl’s loss of popularity was the divorce of his wife which ruined his image as a pure catholic. When Franco passed the law that he could choose the king of Spain it’s also rumored that he passed this law with Karl in mind.
