For the Republic: A History of the Second American Civil War

So, at this point, more like Soviet-style gulags rn?
More or less, yeah. Summer of 1935 is really important because a lot changes, but we can only cover so many facets of this war in a single chapter. There are also camps meant for people to be slaves in, and camps where Hoover just wants to torture/kill you because he suspects you are gay and communist.
And on that note, the likes of Rockefeller and co working for the Republicans makes this all the more ironic.
And of course, there’s the ultimate irony, which is that Morgan and co. actually dodged a bullet with Roosevelt’s death and Smith’s ascension to the Presidency— and they dramatically blew it by overthrowing him, when otherwise they could live in peace as the richest people on earth.

The Republic is not a socialist state. Businesses aligned with the Smith Administration and even the Farmer-Labor nucleus in the Midwest are naturally going to make a lot of money from the war. Even the conservative GOP that seemingly wants Smith hanged on a lamppost is mostly devoted to winning the war at all costs.

It’s fun to imagine somebody living in a time, like 2024, when almost all (but not all) of the people that lived through this are dead, and trying to go back and make sense of the whole thing.

In late 1935 the various Studio heads in Hollywood, concerned with dropping profits from film distribution gathered in a meeting to decide what to do about it. Later that same month it's announce that in Summer of 1936 they will jointly release a new blockbuster film; "The Second American Civil War: the Musical!"
Both NatCorp and the Republic are horrified and agree that something will need to be done before this abomination is released...

It's a thought :)

And thus, peace settles on America again…

Given the kind of leadership that makes up the Coward Caucus, they would be that petty.

And I am sure quite a few people would LOVE to bitchslap Hiram Johnson.

Why does this sound like something Mel Brooks would make? ITTL's "The Producers", about two New York grifters trying to make the worst play possible, and they stumble upon a dedicated Natcorp supporter with a play called "MacArthur!".

Funnily enough, I didn't find a good spot to put it in, but the Hays Code, which governed Hollywood from 1935 to 1968 and prohibited pretty much all graphic content and still lingers today in a lot of really weird ways, is never implemented ITL due to the war breaking out. The war, by virtue of severing most connections between the East and West Coasts, has the consequence of revitalizing the New York film industry that was faltering as production companies moved to Los Angeles. The result of this is that much grittier, sexier, and darker films are being made in New York compared to the Disney and Paramount-dominated Hollywood.

I can further imagine that this phenomenon will be supported and revitalized by the fact that NatCorp will be FURIOUS watching this, and will go to great lengths to mention it in their propaganda about how this "proves" that Rumpublic is a morally degenerate regime.

Which of course will make many people who in OTL would have been indifferent, or even protested about that "degeneration of art", support this development in the film production simply to spite NatCorp XD

Makes me wonder how the SACW will affect Disney, Paramount, Warner Bros., etc.?

Hopefully this will lead into no Comic's code Authority, since the people who back that sort of stuff have endured the trauma of the SACW face first.

I think Walt Disney will initially back the Natcorp regime before doing an about face when the atrocities will come out.

Fingers crossed.

Speaking of comics, if Marston, his wife and their partner survive and still do comics I could see Wonder Woman being depicted as fighting the NatCorps…and being even more strongly bi-coded :p

I actually think Marston would work on how the trauma of the war unintentionally broke taboos around gender roles and exploring of sexuality.

I know that alternate historians in this world will write an alternate history story about: What if FDR was President instead of Al Smith?
i imagine the narrative would be that the March on Washington was a mostly unavoidable event, backlash to ascendant liberalism. It would likely be agreed that Roosevelt would have an even more difficult time than Smith, as a result.

The alternate history where FDR doesn’t die is a fascist America 🤷‍♂️
