Edward dies along side Alfred

If Edward the Confessor had died with his brother (murdered on the orders of Harold Harefoot) who would have suceeded after Harthacnut dies?

Magnus takes over in Denmark - would he have been invited by the Wiganmote to be the King in England?

If not I assume that one of the Earls would have been promoted? Godwin was out of favour due to his part in the death of Alfred (and Edward). Siward seemed to be tainted by the death of Eadwulf.

Any contenders come to mind?

Those with a claim;

1- agreement - Magnus I of Norway ( Harald Hardrada afterwards )
2- power - Godwin or Morcar maybe?
3- direct line - Edward the Atheling

Which leaves three "possible" Alt Historys;

King Harold Godwinson secure on the English throne (maybe after defeating Harald @ Stamford bridge?)

King Harald Hardrada defeating William the Bastard @ Hastings

or

King Edgar (no longer atheling) seeing off all comers after his fathers death?

:D

Much fun to be had!
