What if Venice had ended up as part of Italy, rather than becoming an independent country?

What happens is that Italy takes over the venician banking system loots it of every thing of value and screws up one of the longest lasting fincial systems in europe.

I mean seriously compare Venetias ledgendary anti corruption efforts and libertine social system with Italys open corruption, and frankly hipocritical atitude towards sex and gender issues. How many of us have stories about visiting Italy and having to pay some kind of bribe to get anything done? Now compare that to venice where that kind of non sense is not tolerated.

My bet Italy gets a quick surge of wealth and then squanders it and Venice gets to enjoy the mess that is Italian politics.

You would need very early POD that you can get Venice as part of Italy. These are extremely different countries. Perhaps if Borgias weren't succesful unite Italy or Austrians don't help Venetians. Perhaps Venice could unite Italy but it is quiet hard.

Maybe if France instead of Spain sacked Rome, the Spanish-backed Kingdom of Italy had a bad reputation for many decades which allowed the Venetian region to solidify after the Intermezzo.

Or simply, have Venice staying being ONLY the city of Venice and immediate surrounding areas, instead of keeping the Eastern Coast of Adriatic Sea way to Albania, the Islands of The Agean, Malta, Crete, Rhodes, and Cyprus, as well as the Cyrenaica coast of North Africa, then United Italy could easily overpowering Venice by sheer numbers.

But that requires Venice to actually DELIBERATELY not developing their trading posts, and avoid them being an actively Thassalokratian power base, and this would meant a very different Venice.

OOC: Blame Medieval 2 TW

Those were Austrian regions, and where administered when Venetia was as austria as the polka...and them the abandoned ship hella fast too...

It’s likely that the Venetian language would have largely died out much like the other Gallo-Italic languages. If that happened Americans might be calling pantaloons “trousers” hahaha
