DBWI: The United States stayed United

What would happen if at the end of the Cold War, the United States of America didn't collapse, at the same time as the Soviet Union, into the weaker republics* that former made it up?

*New Republic of California (California minus the counties that make up Jefferson, Nevada, and Baja California+Baja California Sur.);
Deseret ( Arizona, Utah, and Idaho.);
Republic of Texas (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana minus New Orleans);
Confederate States of America (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida);
Great Lakes Union (Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York without Long Island);
Republic of Virginia (Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky);
Dakota Republic (North and South Dakota);
Long Island ( Long Island, major trade city.);
New Orleans ( New Orleans, trade city);
United States of America (Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey);
New English Commonwealth (Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut)

Avoid both powers from invading and occupying China. Financially destroyed both and inflamed internal tensions in the US. The calamity of Yellowstone was only a coup de grace. President LeMay's name should be eternally cursed.

[OOC] Why would the US collapse at the same time as the Soviet Union? The US was prospering as the USSR fell, and there weren't really any big devolutionary movements here like those that the USSR had in the 1980s.

OOC:
1. The Soviet Union and the United States invaded China in 1946 by nuking Beijing. This ended the Second Great War, but also ended up wrecking the economy of the US and caused more separatist movements to start popping up.
2. Wallace won in '68 against Nixon and Humphrey
3. LeMay became President in '71 after Wallace was assassinated
4. LeMay gets elected President in '72... Somehow...
4. Yellowstone erupted in '76, crippling the economy more than it was.
5. By 1984, both countries were on the brink of revolution and civil war.
6. 1989, the world's two biggest superpowers collapse.

OOC: Wallace winning alone would put this into ASB. As for Yellowstone that would probably cause a collapse of world society withing months depending on how bad it was.

OOC: I was actually thinking something along the lines of the recent President LeMay thread where he gets in on a hung electoral college thanks to the two parties miring themselves in scandal and Wallace taking advantage. Then of course the Sino-Soviet clash in '69 goes horribly wrong. It's pretty implausible but the best I could work with.
