Incidentally, the formation of a Jewish state would royally bollox up political Islam. How are you going to appeal to the peaceful coexistence of the people of the book if you're fighting da Juwes? They'd find themselves in immediate opposition to the Jewish minorities, and probably all others, too.

Considering the religious patchwork the Middle East is, this could have disastrous consequences indeed.

Perhaps if the Europeans had sold them weapons instead of just dumping their Jewish populations (many of who were urban dwellers and flooded into the already crowded cities) in Tel-Aviv and Haifa. If the Jews had been able to field a sufficient army instead of a small, hopelessly under equipped militia trying to defend a hostile Palestinian countryside and overcrowded cities plagued with mob violence and food shortages, then they might have avoided the tragic sieges of Jerusalem and the coastal cities. Oh yes, and if the British had not made such a nice deal with Egypt about the sale of stockpiles of leftover WWII material.
